Living with a Cockapoo
With a Cockapoo around the house, you never feel alone , because you never are! Your trusty cockapoo is always at your feet , on the couch or at the door waiting for you to come and let her in . They make excellent companion dogs.
Cockapoos are sweet by nature and once they have befriended you , you will have a life long friend . They are usually friendly and affectionate, and weight ranging from 13 to 28 pounds, they are a comfortable size for most homes.
Our Peaches:
She is F1 Cockapoo and can be playful and energetic at times , running around outside with a new toy , but other times she will quietly lay at our feet or on the bed , sleeping or simply just looking at you.
We have an array of animals on the farm and Peaches gets along with them all . She grooms the kittens like they are her pups and doesn't mind being interrogated by the goats .
She seems to know when you are down and makes it her job to cheer you up with her endless kisses. Wanting nothing more the to see you happy and maybe a few belly rubs .
History
Although not recognized by the American Kennel Club , but recognized by the American Cockapoo Club and other Cockapoo breeding clubs, the Cockapoo has been a well-known designer dog breed in the United States since the 1950s.
Before anyone ever realized the marketing potential of so-called “designer dogs," one crossbreed had already established a hold on America’s heart.
The Cockapoo is the result of mating a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle or is the offspring of two Cocker/Poodle mixes bred with each other. If one parent is a Spaniel and the other a Poodle, the offspring is a F1 Cockapoo. If they are a Cockapoo cross Poodle they are a F1b Cockapoo ( Peaches's pups are F1b). If a Cockapoo is cossed with another Cockapoo their offspring are F2.
It is however not recommended to cross two Cockapoos with each other as some of the pups can have the 'Grandad effect'. This is where a puppy will strongly resemble one of the grandparents, either the Poodle or the Cocker Spaniel and will not have the characteristics of the Cockapoo.
We breed F1 and F1b Cockapoos.
Cockapoos are bright-eyed, scruffy-coated puppies that can grow into dogs that retain a puppy-dog charm.
Types of Coat
Cockapoos are known to be low shedding with little doggy odor to the skin and coat.
Some coats resemble a curly poodle coat and some are looser and wavier, and some can be straighter with the odd kink and curl here and there.
The coat also undergoes a change around eight to nine months old , as their adult coats come through.
Some cockapoos can need at least one or two full body trims a year, but some does not.
Brushing every odd day and trimming of the face and paws weekly will help keep your pup happy.
Cockapoos are usually good for people with allergies since they produce low amounts of dander and hair.It is misleading for breeders to describe them as being totally hypoallergenic, as people can get allergic reactions to the dogs skin, saliva and dander and not just the fur. But they tend to be a good fit for families with allergies.
The Cockapoo can take on the characteristics of either the Poodle or the Cocker Spaniel parents or even a colour gene from further back the generations. Spaniels have a wide spectrum of coat colours alongside the poodle, which makes an interesting array of colours that the cockapoo coat can come in.
Health
It is not unusual for Cockapoos to have a lifespan of 14–18 years, sometimes longer.
They have minimal health issues thanks to there genetics .
They can be subject to ear infections, simply because of there coated drop ears.Therefor we advice new owners to keep their ears dry, especially after a swim or bath and to trim the area around the ears.
Although we have never had such problems with Peaches.
